Ingredients

1 package of puff pastry sheets

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

4 large egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry sheets and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Prick the surface with a fork.

Bake the pastry sheets in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffy. Remove from the oven and let cool.

In a saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, and half of the granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat until just simmering.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, remaining sugar, egg yolks, and salt. Gradually add the warm milk mixture to the yolk mixture, whisking constantly.

Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until thickened (about 3-5 minutes).

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour the custard into a bowl, covering with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

Once the puff pastry and custard are cool, slice the pastry sheets into squares and layer them with a generous amount of custard in between.

Top with another layer of pastry and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
