Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter

2 cups brown sugar, packed

1 cup light corn syrup

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts or chocolate chips for added flavor

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Once the butter is melted, stir in the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt.

Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Allow it to boil for 5 minutes without stirring.

After 5 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully stir in the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract.

Return the saucepan to the heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring continuously.

Once the mixture reaches a soft ball stage (around 240°F), pour it into a greased 9x9-inch baking pan.

Allow the caramels to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Optionally, you can sprinkle with sea salt or add nuts/chocolate chips before it sets.
