Ingredients

2 cups elbow macaroni

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk (whole or 2%)

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: breadcrumbs for topping

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Make the Cheese Sauce: In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps remain. Cook until the mixture thickens.

Add Cheese: Remove the pot from heat and slowly add the cheddar and mozzarella cheese, stirring until melted. Incorporate garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste.

Combine: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until well-coated.

Optional Bake: If you like a crispy topping, transfer the mac and cheese to a greased baking dish, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden.
