Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche bread, sliced (about 10-12 slices)

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pinch of salt

1/4 cup maple syrup (plus extra for serving)

1 cup fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.

Layer the Bread: Place the slices of brioche bread in the baking dish, overlapping them slightly in neat rows.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the brioche slices, making sure all the pieces are coated. Press down gently with a spatula or your hands to ensure the bread absorbs the mixture. For best results, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.

Add Toppings: If desired, sprinkle the fresh berries and chopped nuts over the soaked bread before baking. You can also drizzle the maple syrup over top for added sweetness.

Bake: Remove the plastic wrap and bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.

Serve: Let the baked french toast cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with fresh berries and additional maple syrup.
