Ingredients

2 large russet potatoes

1/2 teaspoon salt (plus more for seasoning)

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or butter)

Fresh herbs (like chives or parsley, for garnish - optional)

Instructions

Prep the Potatoes: Wash and peel the russet potatoes. Grate them using a cheese grater or a food processor with a grating attachment.

Rinse and Drain: Place the shredded potatoes in a bowl of cold water and rinse to remove excess starch. Drain the potatoes well.

Dry the Potatoes: Use a clean kitchen towel to squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the potatoes.

Season: In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded potatoes with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).

Heat the Oil: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the vegetable oil or butter and let it heat up.

Cook the Hashbrowns: Add the seasoned potatoes to the skillet, spreading them out evenly. Press down gently with a spatula.

Fry Until Golden: Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown. Flip the hashbrowns in sections and cook the other side until golden and crispy.

Serve: Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Enjoy your delicious homemade shredded hashbrowns!
