Ingredients

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup pecans, chopped

1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional for extra decadence)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully integrated before adding the next.

Mix in the vanilla extract and buttermilk until combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix!

Fold in the chopped pecans and chocolate chips, if using.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting and garnish with additional pecans.
