Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or Swiss for a twist)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: Garlic powder for seasoning

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown and soft. If they start to brown too quickly, lower the heat. Set aside.

Prepare the Beef Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Mix gently and form into two large patties, ensuring they are slightly larger than the bread since they'll shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and add a bit more butter if needed. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness or until they reach your desired level of doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.

Assemble the Patty Melt: While the patties are cooking, take the remaining butter and spread it on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the non-buttered side of two slices, place a patty with melted cheese and top with a generous spoonful of caramelized onions. Place the other slices of bread, buttered side up, on top to complete the sandwich.

Grill the Sandwiches: Wipe the skillet clean if necessary, and return it to medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Slice and Serve: Once cooked, remove the sandwiches from the skillet and cut them in half. Serve hot, ideally with a side of pickles or a simple salad. Enjoy your delicious Classic Patty Melt Delight!
