Ingredients

4 large croissants

8 slices of thinly sliced ham (preferably honey or smoked)

8 slices of Swiss cheese (or cheddar for a sharper flavor)

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

1 tablespoon fresh chives or parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Croissants: Slice each croissant in half horizontally, creating a top and bottom. If desired, you can spread a light layer of Dijon mustard on the inside of each croissant for extra flavor.

Assemble the Croissants: On the bottom half of each croissant, layer 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese. Place the top half of the croissant back on.

Butter the Outside: Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on the outside of each assembled croissant. This will help achieve a golden, flaky finish once baked.

Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the croissants with the beaten egg. This will give them a beautiful sheen when they come out of the oven.

Bake: Place the assembled croissants on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the croissants are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a minute. Sprinkle with freshly chopped chives or parsley and a crack of black pepper before serving.

Enjoy: Serve warm, and enjoy your buttery ham and cheese croissants with a side salad or some fresh fruit!
